In Rajasthan, there is opportunity to target school children and improve their hygiene behavior such as handwashing. However, there are insufficient funds for schools from the government, an inadequate water supply, and a lack of toilets and hand washing facilities in schools.

Innovative Approach

FINISH Society has a holistic approach where they connect communities and infrastructure. They do this by finding leaders on the ground and working with them to help them develop as role models. This builds capacity and finds people to move the program forward even after the program period has ended, making the program sustainable. FINISH makes the case to communities that effective WASH implementation helps save a large amount of money on medical expenses.

They also provide training school officials, teaching them about communications and interventions for schools. Donor support facilitates construction of infrastructure, which enables the WASH practices that FINISH teaches. They also empower groups to advocate for WASH services promised to them by the government, including supplies like soap.

Program Solution

FINISH Society’s program works towards creating an environment where WASH facilities are available to all children in schools. They focus on creating awareness about the importance of hand washing and following good WASH practices, thus building capacities in communities to improve their lives. They implement various training programs for teachers, school management committees, and parents in order to include everyone who plays a crucial role in the WASH chain. With help from UNICEF, FINISH is also constructing mass hand wash units and providing hand wash materials to school children.
